Is it safe to shower under a boil water advisory? ›

You can continue to use tap water for bathing, showering, washing dishes and clothes during a Boil Water Advisory, as long as you take precautions that no one drinks it. Toddlers and young children are most at risk of accidental ingestion during bathing, so need to be watched carefully.

Health effects from drinking contaminated water may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Inadequate disinfection can occur when a breakdown in the disinfection/treatment process allows untreated water to enter the water distribution system. Pets can get sick from some of the same germs as people or spread germs to people. Give pets bottled water or boiled water that has cooled. If bottled water is not available, bring water to a full rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes).

Steps to Take

Begin with the lowest faucet in your home or business and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your lowest floor to your highest. After five minutes, turn off your faucets in reverse order, from highest to lowest. You should also flush your refrigerator's water lines.
