We were having a night in and making fajitas. I pulled out a batch of this homemade fajita seasoning to season our chicken fajitas and my husband was so confused about the fact that I wasn’t using a store-bought packet. I told him I have only ever used this homemade fajita seasoning and he just couldn’t believe that we’d always used a Fit Foodie recipe. 😏LOL.

Homemade Fajita Seasoning (2)

Fajitas of any kind are a staple in my household. What makes our steak fajitas and chicken fajitas truly the best dinners is our homemade fajita seasoning. No weird fillers or additives, just 6 basic spices you already have.

Our blend is mild in spice level, but can easily be modified if you like it spicy. You can use it on any protein (including beef, seafood, chicken, etc.), on veggies, on beans, and even as an all-purpose seasoning for really anything (speaking from experience).

How to Make Fajita Seasoning

Below is the spice combination you need for homemade fajita seasoning!

  • chili powder
  • ground cumin
  • garlic powder
  • paprika
  • salt
  • pepper

Make it spicy

We mentioned that this spice blend is mild in flavor. If you like it spicy, feel free to add 1/2 teaspoon more paprika or 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne powder.

How much fajita seasoning should I use?

Per pound of meat, we recommend using 3 to 4 teaspoons of seasoning. A good rule of thumb is to start small and continue adding to taste.

How long does fajita seasoning last?

We recommend storing your homemade spice mix in an airtight container and storing it in a cool, dark, and dry place for up to 6 months.

How to Use this Fajita Seasoning Recipe

While the most classic way to use fajita seasoning is to season meat and veggies in fajitas, you can also use it in so many other ways

Flavor soup:use this seasoning to give yourchiliortaco soupsome extra flavor!

Meat rub:you can use this fajita mix as a spice rub for any kind of meat such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp. Give your meat a nice pat down and let sit for about 20 minutes before cooking your preferred method.

Roasted veggies:if you’re a roasted veggie girl like me, you’d die with the flavor this seasoning gives your veggies. Follow our tutorial forhow to roast sweet potatoes, but sprinkle on this spice mix instead!

Turn it into a marinade:combine a few teaspoons of seasoning with some olive oil and lime juice and you’ve got yourself a fajita marinade! Try our steak fajita marinade.

Very delicious and a keeper! I usually get the premade packets at the store, but I wanted to mix my own. This recipe is a hit in my house! I have eaten 2 and my only regret is that there is no room for more, but there are leftovers!!!

Great recipe! I prefer to make my own spice mixes so I can control the salt. I used this on chicken tonight and it was a hit with the family.

Fajita isn’t a seasoning, Fajita is a specific cut of meat. It originated in the Rio Grande Valley when cattle ranchers would give the leftover meat specifically “skirt steak” to the Mexican Cattle herders because it was thought of as undesirable. Faja meaning “skirt” in Spanish. This is just a form of Cultural appropriation. If you want an authentic Fajita seasoning recipe for Authentic Fajita’s I recommend https://www.austinchronicle.com/food/2005-03-04/261130/ for not only a recipe but also a history lesson.

It is just a recipe. It’s not “cultural appropriation” in any way. I guess then there are no real “American” dishes since we are a hodge podge of cultures and their influences on our food. Seriously, your statement is ridiculous and only serves to divide people instead of simply enjoying the recipes and the food they create.

I thought this was very good! I tried it over just fajita vegetables and a good 1.5 T of this mix was enough. Personally, I would add some cayenne pepper just for a little heat.

I think 1 packet is normally 3 tablespoons, but it might be 4!
